Nine years ago, I was flying from Brazil to Miami to study English and to experience one of the most incredible journeys of my life. I was 17 years old and uncertainties and fears of the unknown surrounded me in this whole new world I was arriving in. I had no idea what to expect, but all my fears and insecurities started to fade away the moment I stepped inside my new host family home, where I would live for the next 3 months.  I came across a totally different person than I could have ever imagined. My host mom was a strong, kind, and loving person and so much more than I could have ever hoped for. Sylvie was there for me every moment of the journey, being patient with all my fears and even with my grammatical challenges. She was always teaching me and showing me the right way to express myself in this new language. She was really a mom to me… my “organic American mom.”

Welcoming someone into your home, especially a complete stranger, requires a lot of courage. It also requires a lot of empathy loving-kindness and humanism and Sylvie was all that. She always had a good lesson to learn and share from all things that came her way, with great courage and common sense. When I learned that she was now a life coach I was really happy because I know that helping people comes so naturally to her - as if it were her life's mission. I know that other students who also had the chance to have Sylvie and her son as a host family will understand what I am expressing. All I want for her is happiness and peace in her new career, and I hope she never loses her faith in people, because that’s what makes her so special, believing in people.
